The consequences of malnutrition

Malnutrition is a common yet under-recognised condition, with 3 million people in the UK malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.2 It can affect up to 11% of patients visiting their GP, 29% of adults admitted to hospital and 35% of people recently admitted to a care home.2

When left untreated, malnutrition can lengthen hospitalisation, reduce quality of life and increase the risk of developing other diseases.3

However, early nutrition intervention can improve health and cost outcomes, reduce morbidity and mortality, and reduce length of stay in hospital.4,5
