Supporting your nutrition
Nutrition is the science of food and its relationship to health, i.e. how we digest food, and how our body uses the nutrients in food for growth, maintenance and repair.
Listening to our bodies and making mindful choices when it comes to our diet is key to improved nutrition and promoting overall good health and well-being. For the majority, eating a well-balanced diet should provide adequate vitamins and minerals to provide the cells within our body with the right nutrients to maintain good health.
We understand if you are not managing to eat healthily you may find it difficult to obtain optimum levels of every nutrient. Supplementing with a daily multivitamin can provide that extra support to ensure any nutrient gaps are filled, helping keep our bodies in good working order.*
*Vitamin C and zinc contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
Macro and micronutrients
Nutrients can be divided into two major categories: macronutrients, or micronutrients.
What are macronutrients?
There are three main types of macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
These are required in larger quantities by the body and tend to make up the bulk of our diet. When broken down during digestion they can provide us with essential nutrients we are otherwise unable to obtain or make ourselves. Through eating a balanced diet, it is possible to reach our optimal daily macronutrient intake.
What are micronutrients?
These refer to vitamins, minerals and trace elements which are required in much smaller amounts (milligram or microgram) daily.
Despite requiring only small quantities, micronutrients can be harder to obtain, and are vitally important to healthy development and the successful functioning of the body.
The amount of each nutrient needed daily is called the nutrient requirement. These are different for each nutrient and will vary between individuals and throughout our lifetime.
Types of vitamins
- Fat soluble vitamins: these are absorbed with other fats and stored in your body. There are four in total: vitamins A, D, E and K.
- Water soluble vitamins: these are not stored in your body and anything you don’t need will be removed in your urine. There are nine of these in total – the B group vitamins and vitamin C.
Vitamins each play a critical role, whether that’s vitamin A which contributes to normal vision, vitamin B1 which contributes to the normal function of the heart, or vitamin C contributing to the normal functioning of the immune system.
Nutritional minerals
Minerals refer to elements such as calcium and magnesium, which are required for the maintenance of healthy bones and teeth, or iron which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Trace elements
These refer to elements required in even smaller quantities, although they are still essential, examples include copper which contribute to the normal function of the nervous system, and zinc which contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
